A similar game to soccer was played in ancient Greece but modern soccer was invented in England and it's original name is football, it was the first sport being called football, before american football. It's football because you play it with your feet and a ball.

Because it's called football, if American football was the original one it wouldn't have American in front of it and "soccer" as you call it would be called European football (not sure about the original country but I think the first variation started in Greece).
