Why do people dislike football cliches?

I only dislike them because they've been said continuously for decades, and show football managers, players, commentators and pundits aren't that intelligent :) lol..

But then don't people get metaphors? Or abstract language? Seems many people dislike them for this reason. If a commentator or pundit on Sky or ESPN says "the two teams are drawing no quarter" it doesn't literally mean a quarter as in four parts of a whole. Since when is human language strictly literal anyhow? lol.
