Rodriguez is a very, very talented man, but it may not be the best fit for the club. There's no real position in the team for him, at least not yet.
Look, I talked him up a lot at Porto and saw less at Monaco. I've always been a fan. But even some Porto fans are saying that - whilst very talented - he never showed THAT level of ability. His performances for Colombia at the WC probably were slightly above his true level. If you ever read Soccernomics you will see that buying players after WCs is always a risk - that's something we have all heard as a cliche but they back it up with statistics (stats have their place sometimes, as long as there's context).
Rodriguez may well go on to be brilliant for RM - so may Kroos, whose signing I also questioned. However, I don't see why RM would try and fix what isn't broken - they struggled at times last season too, but not really because of Di Maria. Rodriguez might be more talented than DM, but is he really going to fit into that RM team and provide the level of performance and energy that Di Maria was capable of? I'm not convinced at all.
All teams need balance. RM have lots of talented players but there are glaring weaknesses in their system. Someone needs to tell Perez that football isn't like FIFA or Football Manager.
