I'd like to see him play in some smaller games for us, so he can get some experience.
Playing one of the harder to beat ' teams might be too much for him at the moment.
Nice to use a youth player and a left footed ball playing centre back could give us something new.
As for Marcos Rojo, its a bit unprofessional to cancel his training session, but at least someone wants to join us and he did well at the world cup, so he has some top level experience and I'm sure he was in one of the pundits team of the tournament.
He can play as a centre back and a left back, but we already have Blackett who can play that, though the difference is that Marcos Rojo as top level experience.
I wouldn't sign him, because we already have that type of player, though Van Gaal will probably make it work if he does.
We need cover at left back with Luke Shaw lacking top level experience (Champions League) and being out for a month.
Here are some options of what can be done:
A) Sign a versatile player who can play decent as a left back e.g. Blind or Luiz Gustavo.
B) Sign a left back on loan.
C) Play a youth player there e.g. Reece James, because Luke Shaw our first few games aren't against the 'harder to beat teams'.
Luke Shaw is Premier League proven, so he should perform against the bigger teams too and we spent ￡30m+ on him, so he has to be playing !
I'd go for Blind, though I think Van Gaal will make it work whichever one of them he signs, IF he signs one of them.
Defensive midfield is still a priority, maybe someone on loan ?
He has impressed immensely in the pre-season. With young players, good performances stem from confidence in their ability. I don't know exactly what to call it, fearlessness of youth perhaps ??. Like someone already said, it won't do to push him into the deep end by playing him against our rivals.
Also, like you said, his versatility as a defender does help a lot: he can play anywhere on the left-side of defence (left-sided CB, LB or even a LWB).
That said, I'd be happy if Rojo is bought as cover (taking injuries, loss of form into account). I also agree the training cancellation was unprofessional (I read somewhere he has been fined).
Rojo or Blind ??. Why not both ??. Blind is even more versatile (LB, defensive CM, LWB, CB). We need players who have played in such positions rather than trying to convert wingers into wing backs. LvG may have extracted quite a lot out of Ashley Young as a player to have him play quite well as wing back but I fear it may not be a viable long term option (definitely a risky proposition against our rivals).
Tyler Blackett looked pretty good in the pre-season friendlies, but there is a world of difference between that, and proper competitive matches. Strewth even I could have looked good against LA Galaxy.
We have some easy games to start the season and it would be good to see him come off the bench to get some first team experience, and boost his confidence,
..... but I don't think he is quite ready to do a job against the top Premier League sides (Chelsea Man City Liverpool Arsenal) who would probably leave him demoralised or even traumatised like the whole squad looked to be, at times, when Barcelona were slaughtering us at Wembley in 2011.

Is he good enough to play in the premier league this season??. He has honestly looked our best ball playing CB in preseason. Versatile as he can play LWB as well. Looks more cool and composed than Evans.
Also what your opinion on Marcos Rojo wanting to join us and cancelling his teams training sessions for his current club , lack of professionalism??
